When we think back to the origin of creativity in our lives, we can’t help but think of the Crayola Crayon!
One of the most satisfying feelings was opening a fresh box of nicely sharpened, and ready-to-go, Crayola Crayons.
Any creation, whether a stadium or a microchip, starts with an idea - in the mind.
But then, YOU have to then bring that idea to life!
In its origins, the child's “crayon” was just a cylindrical stick of colored clay or chalk (thought to have been developed in Europe) and wasn’t very effective.
That all changed with "Binney & Smith Company", an American manufacturing company, specializing in colorants and pigments for industrial use.
In 1900, the company purchased a stone mill in Easton, PA, and began producing slate pencils for schools. This started their research into non-toxic and colorful drawing mediums for kids and in 1903, the crayon made its debut.
Then in April 1904 at the St. Louis World's Fair, Binney & Smith won the Golden Medal for their An-Du-Septic dustless chalk (also used in schools).
Crayola used the opportunity with their “gold medal” to develop a new packaging strategy by emphasizing the gold medal on the front of many of their products and crayon boxes.
This marketing strategy was so successful and recognizable to their "brand" that they adapted the "gold medal" format to most of the other Crayola products, and it appeared on their packaging for the next 50-plus years!
The actual name Crayola was coined by Alice Binney who was a former schoolteacher. It comes from craie (French for "chalk") and ola for "oleaginous" or "oily."
Can you believe that since 1903, more than 600 shades of Crayola crayons have been produced?!
And can you, even now, SMELL that Crayola Crayon?
That distinctive smell, along with the formulation of the nontoxic pigments and the wax, is still to this day, over 100 years later, a closely guarded secret!
